We collect working laptops, phones and tablets, wipe and refurbish them, and pass them to the World Computer Exchange for a new home.
The club
Who we are
SPEC is a student-run club at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. We collect technology people have stopped using, ensure it still works, and route it somewhere it will be used again.
Why it matters
A student without a computer has to work harder on every assignment than a student with a device. The machine that closes that gap is usually already in someone's closet, three years unused. This club is a working effort to reduce the digital divide.
Who we work with
The World Computer Exchange is a 501(c)(3) that has spent more than two decades sending surplus technology to schools and nonprofits worldwide. They run Refurbishing Clubs at high schools near their chapters, Boston included. Our nearest chapter is in Andover, Massachusetts.
What happens to a device
We work with the WCE to wipe every storage drive with industry-standard erasure software and record a certificate of data destruction. Devices that can be refurbished are repaired, tested and distributed. Anything that can't be reused goes to R2 or e-Stewards certified recyclers rather than landfill.
